Some of your favorite foods might not be around forever. Climate change, environmental damage, and shifting farming conditions are putting many common ingredients at serious risk.
From morning coffee to afternoon chocolate, the foods we take for granted could become rare luxuries. Here is a look at 23 everyday foods that scientists and farmers are genuinely worried about.
1. Coffee

Your morning cup of coffee may one day be a rare treat. Coffee plants need very specific temperatures and rainfall to thrive, and rising global temperatures are shrinking the regions where coffee can grow.
Studies suggest that by 2050, suitable coffee-growing land could be cut nearly in half.
Without major changes in farming practices, your daily brew could become far more expensive and hard to find. Shade-grown and climate-resilient varieties are being developed, but progress is slow.
2. Chocolate

Chocolate lovers, take note. Cacao trees grow only in a narrow band near the equator, and they are extremely sensitive to heat and drought.
As temperatures climb, countries like Ghana and Ivory Coast, which produce most of the world’s cocoa, are losing farmable land fast.
Researchers are working on heat-tolerant cacao varieties, but demand keeps rising while supply shrinks. Some experts warn that chocolate could become a luxury item within a few decades.
3. Bananas

The banana you eat today is actually a clone. Almost every banana sold in stores is the Cavendish variety, and because they are genetically identical, a single disease can wipe them all out.
A fungal infection called Tropical Race 4 is already spreading across banana farms worldwide.
This is not the first time a banana variety has gone extinct. The Gros Michel banana was wiped out in the 1950s by a similar disease, and history could repeat itself.
4. Avocados

Avocado toast might sound simple, but growing avocados is anything but. Each avocado requires an enormous amount of water, roughly 60 gallons per fruit.
In drought-prone regions like California and Chile, water scarcity is already making avocado farming increasingly difficult and costly.
On top of water issues, avocado crops are vulnerable to root rot diseases and extreme weather. Prices have already spiked multiple times in recent years, hinting at bigger shortages ahead.
5. Honey

Bees do far more than make honey. They pollinate a huge portion of the world’s food supply, but bee populations are collapsing at an alarming rate.
Pesticides, habitat loss, parasites, and disease are all contributing to what scientists call Colony Collapse Disorder.
Fewer bees means less honey and fewer pollinated crops across the board. Some regions have already reported honey shortages.
Without urgent action to protect bee populations, honey could become a rare and very expensive product.
6. Wheat

Bread, pasta, cereal, and thousands of other products all rely on wheat. Droughts, heat waves, and unpredictable rainfall are hitting wheat-growing regions harder every year.
Russia and Ukraine, two of the world’s biggest wheat exporters, have already seen harvests disrupted by conflict and climate stress.

Farmed salmon helps fill the gap but comes with its own problems, including disease, pollution, and the need for huge amounts of fish feed. As wild stocks dwindle, salmon could shift from a weekly dinner staple to an occasional indulgence.
8. Maple Syrup

Maple syrup depends on a very specific weather pattern: cold nights and warm days in early spring. Climate change is disrupting this window, causing maple trees to bud earlier and shortening the sap-tapping season.
In some regions, the season has already shrunk by weeks.
Canada produces about 70 percent of the world’s maple syrup, and even there, producers are noticing big changes year to year. Enjoy it now, because future bottles could cost significantly more.
9. Vanilla

Real vanilla is already one of the most expensive spices in the world, second only to saffron. It comes from a single orchid species grown mainly in Madagascar, and the flowers must be hand-pollinated within hours of blooming.
Cyclones, droughts, and political instability in Madagascar regularly cause price spikes.
Most vanilla-flavored products already use artificial substitutes. But if you love the real thing, expect it to get even harder to afford as climate pressures mount.
10. Rice

Rice feeds more than half the world’s population, yet it is one of the crops most threatened by rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion into farmland. Flooding, which is increasing with climate change, can devastate rice paddies in low-lying countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam.
Rice also requires enormous amounts of fresh water to grow. As water becomes scarcer and weather becomes more extreme, stable rice production is no longer something we can take for granted.

Peanut butter sandwiches might sound humble, but peanuts are facing a surprisingly serious threat. Peanuts grow best in warm, consistent climates with well-timed rainfall.
Drought conditions in major growing states like Georgia have already caused significant crop losses in recent years.
Aflatoxin, a dangerous mold that thrives in hot, dry conditions, also poses a growing problem for peanut crops. As climate patterns shift, both the quality and quantity of peanut harvests could decline noticeably.
12. Oysters

Major producers like India and Australia have already seen significant harvest failures.
As global temperatures rise, the window for successful chickpea growing is shrinking. Plant breeders are racing to develop tougher varieties, but the process takes years and demand is growing fast.
15. Strawberries

Few fruits say summer like a fresh strawberry, but growing conditions for this beloved berry are becoming harder to manage. Strawberries are very sensitive to temperature swings, late frosts, and inconsistent water supply, all of which are becoming more common with climate change.
Pests and fungal diseases also thrive in warmer, wetter conditions and can wipe out fields quickly. California and Florida, the top strawberry-producing states, are already feeling the pressure, leading to shorter seasons and higher prices.

Potatoes seem like one of the most reliable crops on earth, but they are more fragile than they look. Late blight, the same disease that caused the Irish Famine in the 1840s, is still a major threat and is becoming harder to control as resistant strains emerge in warmer, wetter climates.
Heat stress during the growing season can also reduce potato yields dramatically. Since potatoes are a staple food for over a billion people, any serious supply disruption would have global consequences.
20. Olive Oil

Mediterranean cuisine runs on olive oil, but olive trees are struggling. Southern Europe has been hit by record-breaking droughts and heat waves that have slashed olive harvests year after year.
In 2023, global olive oil production dropped so sharply that prices more than doubled in many countries.
Olive trees can live for thousands of years, but they cannot survive the increasingly extreme conditions battering the Mediterranean region. New growing regions are being explored, but it takes years for new trees to produce fruit.
21. Corn

Corn is the backbone of the American food system, used in everything from tortillas and popcorn to high-fructose corn syrup and livestock feed. It is also extremely sensitive to heat during pollination.
Just a few days above 95 degrees Fahrenheit during that critical window can sharply reduce yields.
Midwestern heat waves are becoming more frequent and intense. Combined with shifting rainfall patterns and the spread of new pests, corn production faces growing uncertainty that could affect hundreds of everyday food products.
22. Lentils

Lentils have quietly become a global protein powerhouse, popular in soups, stews, and plant-based diets everywhere. Canada produces a huge share of the world’s lentil supply, but the devastating heat dome that struck western Canada in 2021 scorched crops and cut production by nearly half in a single season.
Lentils are relatively drought-tolerant compared to other legumes, but extreme heat is a different story. As temperature records keep breaking, lentil farmers face an increasingly unpredictable growing environment.

Apples need a certain number of cold winter hours to bloom properly in spring. As winters get warmer, many apple-growing regions are not getting enough of this so-called chill time.
The result is irregular blooming, poor fruit development, and unpredictable harvests that frustrate farmers and shoppers alike.
