Even the biggest stars in Hollywood have faced rejection from people they admired. It turns out that fame and fortune don’t guarantee a yes when it comes to love or friendship.

Some of the most surprising celebrity rejection stories involve well-known names turning down other well-known names. These moments remind us that no matter how famous you are, rejection is something everyone experiences.

1. Justin Bieber Rejected by Rihanna

At just 16 years old, Justin Bieber worked up the courage to ask Rihanna for her phone number at the 2011 NBA All-Star game. Rihanna, who was 23 at the time, turned him down flat.

For a teen pop star used to screaming fans, that had to sting a little.

Bieber had a well-known crush on Rihanna for years. Even superstar status couldn’t help him score those digits.

Sometimes age gaps speak louder than fame.

Back in 2015, Justin Bieber made no secret about his crush on Jennifer Lawrence, and someone eventually asked her directly if she would “tap that.” Lawrence delivered one of the most iconic responses ever: a firm, unapologetic “hard no.”

Lawrence has always been known for her blunt humor and refreshing honesty, and this moment was no different. Poor Bieber had to take that one on the chin.

Even heartthrobs get turned down sometimes.

Before Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez became one of pop music’s most talked-about couples, Selena had a very different take on him. During a 2010 interview, she called him “like my little brother,” which is one of the friendliest ways to get rejected without it feeling too harsh.

Of course, by 2011, the two were officially dating, so the story had a happy ending. Still, being called someone’s little brother is a pretty solid rejection.

At least it didn’t last long for Bieber.

4. Aaron Carter Publicly Rejected by Hilary Duff

Aaron Carter and Hilary Duff dated as teenagers, but when Carter took to Twitter in 2014 to publicly declare his love for Duff all over again, she was not having it. Duff responded by saying the whole thing felt “uncomfortable” and reminded people it had been many years since they were together.

Airing out old feelings on social media rarely goes the way you hope. Duff had long moved on, and Carter’s very public declaration made things awkward fast.

Lesson learned: some conversations are better had in private.

Long before Julianne Hough became a Dancing with the Stars fan favorite, she was just a kid with a serious crush on Daniel Radcliffe after watching him in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She even wrote him a Valentine’s Day love note, pouring her heart out on paper.

Radcliffe never wrote back, leaving young Julianne heartbroken. It’s one of those sweet, relatable stories that proves even future celebrities get ghosted.

Sometimes your Hogwarts hero just isn’t into you.

Nicole Kidman once revealed on The Tonight Show that she had a genuine crush on Jimmy Fallon, but he had no idea. Not once, but twice, Fallon unknowingly brushed off her romantic interest, treating their meetings like casual hangouts instead of the dates she was hoping for.

Fallon admitted he had no clue she was interested, which made the story both hilarious and a little painful. Kidman was a good sport about it all.

Missing your shot with an Oscar winner is a tough thing to realize years later.

Rihanna has a reputation for doing things her way, and that apparently includes turning down famous admirers at parties. Comedian Chris Rock once shared that he tried his luck with Rihanna, only for her to look at him, in his own words, “like I was one of her aunts.”

Rock was 53 and Rihanna was 29 at the time, so the age gap was certainly a factor. Still, being compared to someone’s elderly relative is one of the more creative rejections out there.

Rihanna doesn’t sugarcoat things.

8. Donald Trump Turned Down by Brooke Shields

After Donald Trump’s divorce from Marla Maples, he reportedly set his sights on Brooke Shields and asked her out on a date. Shields turned him down, letting him know she already had a boyfriend.

Simple, polite, and completely final.

Trump was known for his bold personality even before his political career, but even that confidence couldn’t win Shields over. Having a boyfriend is one of the clearest ways to send a message.

Shields handled the whole thing with grace and zero drama.

Salma Hayek had her own run-in with Donald Trump’s pursuit when he tried to get her phone number by first befriending her boyfriend. The move backfired spectacularly when Trump used the connection to call only Hayek and invite her to dinner, completely leaving the boyfriend out.

Hayek turned him down and wasn’t shy about sharing the story later. The whole scheme came across as sneaky rather than charming.

Bold strategies don’t always lead to the outcome someone is hoping for.

10. Madonna Called Out by D’Angelo

Madonna is one of the most iconic figures in pop history, but even she has faced an unexpected shutdown. When she spotted D’Angelo at an event and wanted to sit next to him, she told another woman the seat was taken.

D’Angelo’s response?

A cool and direct: “I’m thinking you’re rude.”

That kind of confidence from D’Angelo is genuinely impressive. Most people wouldn’t dream of calling out Madonna like that.

It’s a reminder that attitude matters more than fame when it comes to first impressions.

After Blake Lively publicly gushed about being a huge fan of Aziz Ansari’s work, Ansari thought it was the perfect opening to start a friendship. They exchanged numbers, and Ansari started sending messages.

The problem? Most of them were left completely unread.

Getting ignored by someone who said they loved your work is a special kind of sting. Lively may not have meant any harm, but Ansari definitely noticed the silence.

Sometimes celebrity admiration doesn’t translate into an actual reply.

Emma Watson had a real-life crush on her Harry Potter co-star Tom Felton for years while filming the beloved series. Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, knew about the crush and was upfront about how he felt, telling people he saw her “in a younger, sisterly way.”

Watson later admitted that hearing those words broke her heart. Being placed in the sibling category by your crush is rough at any age.

At least the two remained close friends long after the cameras stopped rolling.

Drake and Nicki Minaj have one of the most celebrated friendships in hip-hop, but for a long time Drake wanted something more. He admitted to having a deep, long-standing crush on Minaj, who consistently saw him as something closer to a little brother than a romantic interest.

No matter how many times Drake expressed his feelings, Minaj kept things firmly in friend territory. It’s hard to compete with someone who has already decided how they see you.

Drake eventually channeled those feelings into some very emotional music.

Katy Perry made it very clear how she felt when One Direction’s Niall Horan kept trying to flirt with her and get her number. Perry’s response was equal parts funny and final: she told him she could babysit him and that she was basically like his mom.

Horan was a teenager at the time, so Perry’s reaction made a lot of sense. Still, getting mom-zoned is arguably worse than being friend-zoned.

Horan took it in stride and never seemed too broken up about it publicly.

15. Harry Styles Turned Away by Lindsay Lohan

Harry Styles once showed up at Lindsay Lohan’s hotel room late at night, apparently hoping to spend some time with her. Lohan, not immediately recognizing who he was, turned him away at the door without much hesitation.

Once she realized it was the One Direction heartthrob, Lohan seemed to regret the decision, but the moment had already passed. Showing up unannounced late at night is always a risky move, no matter how famous you are.

Timing, it turns out, is everything.
