Feeding a whole family can feel expensive, especially when food prices keep going up. The good news is that tasty, filling dinners do not have to cost a fortune.

With a few simple ingredients and some clever planning, you can put a hot meal on the table for less than £8. Here are some easy ideas that kids and grown-ups will both enjoy.

1. Classic Spaghetti Bolognese

Ask any British family about their favourite weeknight dinner, and spag bol usually wins. A 500g pack of beef mince, a tin of chopped tomatoes, an onion and dried pasta cost around £6 in total.

Want the sauce to go further? Stir in grated carrot or a handful of red lentils.

Nobody will notice, and you might even get leftovers for lunch.

Top with a little cheddar for that cosy finishing touch.

2. Cheesy Jacket Potatoes

Few things beat the crunch of a crispy potato skin on a cold evening. Four big baking potatoes cost under £1, and a tin of beans plus a block of cheese brings the total to around £4.

Bake them in the oven for about an hour, or speed things up by microwaving first.

Kids love choosing their own toppings, so set out tuna, sweetcorn or coleslaw and let everyone build their own.

3. Sausage and Bean Casserole

Picture a chilly Sunday, the windows steamed up, and a pot gently bubbling on the hob. That is the magic of a sausage casserole.

A pack of eight sausages, two tins of mixed beans, an onion and some chopped tomatoes come to about £6. Add smoked paprika for a gentle, warming kick.

Serve it with mashed potatoes or bread for dunking. Everyone will happily mop their plates clean.

4. Homemade Margherita Pizza

Friday night takeaway can easily cost £25. Making pizza at home costs a fraction of that, and it is much more fun.

Mix flour, yeast, water and a pinch of salt for the base. Spread on passata, then scatter grated mozzarella over the top.

The whole thing comes in under £4.

Fun fact: the margherita was reportedly named after Queen Margherita of Italy back in 1889. Your kids can crown their own creations too.

5. Red Lentil Dhal

Lentils might be the most underrated item in the supermarket. A 500g bag costs around £1 and feeds a crowd.

Simmer them with onion, garlic, curry powder and a tin of coconut milk until thick and creamy. It takes about 25 minutes and needs very little stirring.

Serve over rice with a squeeze of lemon. Even meat lovers tend to go back for seconds, and the whole pot costs about £3.50.

One tray, hardly any washing up, and a dinner that feels like a party. Who could say no?

Slice chicken thighs, peppers and onions, then toss them in oil and fajita seasoning. Roast for 25 minutes while you lay the table.

Thighs are cheaper and juicier than breasts, so the whole meal with wraps and a dollop of yoghurt stays around £7. Let everyone roll their own at the table.

7. Cottage Pie

Grandma’s kitchen in a dish. Cottage pie has been warming British homes since the 1700s, when cooks used it to stretch leftover meat.

Brown some beef mince with onion, carrots and gravy. Spoon fluffy mash on top, then bake until golden and crispy at the edges.

The total comes to about £6.50 for four people. Make a double batch and freeze one, and future you will be very grateful.

8. Vegetable Fried Rice

Got leftover rice sitting in the fridge? Perfect, because day-old rice actually fries better than fresh.

Heat a splash of oil, add frozen mixed veg, then crack in a few eggs and scramble them. Toss in the rice with soy sauce and spring onions.

Dinner is ready in 15 minutes for roughly £3. Throw in any odds and ends from the fridge.

Leftover ham or chicken works brilliantly here.

Student favourite, family hero. A tuna pasta bake has saved countless busy weeknights.

Cook penne, then mix it with two tins of tuna, sweetcorn and a simple cheese sauce. You can also use a tin of soup instead of making sauce from scratch.

Sprinkle extra cheese on top and bake for 20 minutes. Four hungry people can eat well for about £5, with crispy cheesy corners for the lucky ones.

Tins are a money-saver’s best friend, and this curry proves it. Two tins of chickpeas, chopped tomatoes and a bag of spinach make a hearty meal.

Fry onion and garlic with curry paste, add everything else, then let it simmer for 20 minutes. The spinach wilts down in seconds.

With rice, the meal costs around £4. It is packed with protein and fibre, so tummies stay full until breakfast.

Kids giggle at the name, then fall in love with the taste. Sausages baked in fluffy Yorkshire pudding batter is pure comfort.

Meat-free Mondays never tasted so good. Kidney beans, black beans and sweet potato give this chilli a rich, chunky bite.

Season with cumin, paprika and a little chilli powder. Go easy on the heat if little ones are eating.

Everything comes to about £4.50. Serve with rice, jacket potatoes or tortilla chips.

Did you know? Chilli often tastes better the next day, once the flavours have had time to mingle.

Sometimes the simplest dinners bring the biggest smiles. A fish finger sandwich is nostalgic, quick and wonderfully messy.

A box of 20 fish fingers costs around £3. Add a loaf of soft bread, some lettuce and a squeeze of ketchup or tartare sauce.

Pair it with oven chips or peas for a full meal under £6. It feels like a seaside treat, minus the cheeky seagulls.

Less scrubbing, more chatting. That is the beauty of cooking everything together in a single pot.

Brown chicken drumsticks, then add rice, stock and frozen peas. Pop the lid on and let the rice soak up all those tasty juices.

Drumsticks are one of the cheapest cuts around, so the total cost stays near £6. A sprinkle of parsley at the end makes it look restaurant-ready.

Born from wartime thrift, bubble and squeak got its funny name from the noises it makes in the pan.

Mash leftover potatoes with cabbage or sprouts, shape into patties, then fry until crispy. Top each one with a fried egg.

Using leftovers means the meal could cost as little as £2. It is a clever way to cut food waste, and kids love the crunchy edges.

Mushrooms bring a meaty, savoury flavour without the meaty price tag. A big punnet costs around £1.50.

Fry them with onion and garlic until golden. Stir in paprika, a stock cube and a few spoonfuls of soured cream or crème fraîche.

Spoon it over rice or tagliatelle for a cosy dinner around £4. It tastes fancy enough for guests, yet it is ready in about 20 minutes.

Simmer them in passata and serve with pasta. The whole meal costs about £6.

Any extras make great sandwich fillings for tomorrow’s lunchbox.

Nothing says comfort quite like a steaming bowl of homemade soup on a rainy day.

Leeks, potatoes, an onion and a stock cube are all you need. Simmer for 20 minutes, then blend until silky smooth.

A big pot costs roughly £3, leaving plenty of budget for a crusty loaf and butter. Grate some cheddar on top to make it extra filling for hungry teenagers.

Fast, fresh and full of colour. A stir fry is the speedy answer when everyone is starving.

Buy pork shoulder steaks and slice them thinly. Toss them in a hot pan with peppers, carrots and beansprouts, then add egg noodles.

A sauce of soy, honey and garlic pulls it all together. Four portions cost about £7.

Keep the heat high so everything stays crunchy rather than soggy.
